A Sussex grandmother was refused a bottle of wine because she could not prove she was over 18.

Tina MacNaughton-Jones, 47, thought the checkout assistant was joking when she asked her for proof of age.

Waitrose also refused to serve the red wine to her 22-year-old daughter Fiona, who did have ID, in case she gave it to her mother.

Ms MacNaughton-Jones, a grandmother of two from Worthing, told the Brighton Argus: "It really threw me.

"The lady said 'You should be flattered'. I said to her 'Are you having a laugh?'. People say I look young for my age, but I don't look young enough not to be served alcohol."

A spokesman for the Waitrose store in Worthing said the member of staff had been "a little overzealous" and apologised.
