the sad demise of my old 2 liter twin spark engine....

three valve head?

holy pistons batman!! the rest was in the sump!

the new V6 is just sublime though!

its a damned shame, because as you can see, the rest of the engine was in really good shape!

I don't think that's the point, though, PhilO.

only 2 parts let it down though, a valve and a piston!

Only two, eh ? Well.  I suppose it can be forgiven for only two . . . .

FUBAR

its either no parts letting you down, or it may as well be all of them... 2 = all of them

That looks fkin destroyed tho, mega manky!!!
It's the time that we kill that keeps us alive...

That'll be just one part failed - the valve.  The piston would have been fine, if it wasn't for the end of a valve floating around in it.

I did exactly the same thing to my sprint car engine.

Roadkill

That goes against PhilOs theory that someone over-revved it causing a brittle piston.

It makes sense that it was a valve failure, leading to the destroyed piston and not vice-versa.

Wait for philos rant i would agree with jamie, ahving seen simapler on other motors i have worked on over the years. I also have a copy of hotrod where a motor let rip on a dyno pull and it was diagnosed as a worn valve guide that started the chain reaction

Roadkill

So it was just a natural engine failure, then.

Like a frikkin' time bomb . . .

no arguments here - over revving was just a theory, it happens, but possibly not in this case, without a black box on board, you cant tell for sure.

its also possible that an over rev slightly bent a valve, that became slightly sticky - if thats the case, and the valve didn't return to its seat properly, its possible the piston could have kissed it, breaking the head off.

yes, the valve ate the piston, and there was also some top end wear anyway, remember the noisy lifer and the occasional puff of smoke on start up..

either way, what is cirtain is that it dropped a valve, rather than suffering piston failure.

55starchief

The puff f smoke could well have been a worn guide just like the ford motor, makes you think when you see the pictures of both the ford motor and its total destruction and the alfa motor. The judder really was severe and i would guess that was the valve destroying the piston

philoldsmobile

yup, sounds about right.
