My apologies if I tread on anyone's toes but I personally think that there should be age breaks to test peoples ability to control a vehicle when they reach a certain age, say every 5 years from 60years old and onwards.

If you cant control the vehicle (safely) you shouldn't be on the road.

Although inexperienced young drivers and idiots (boy racers) account for a larger percentage of RTA's some of the worst driving I have ever seen has been by what can only be described as OAP's, proven by this story.

Fair play.

One £600 Festa wrecks a Porker.

Must be every Festa's dream way to go.

But seriously, yeah after retirement age people need regular assessments - no doubt.

Well half the younger drivers I watch can't park to save their life, so god's know what they'll be like when they get to 60
Basically I think that they just can't be bothered to learn

and lazyness just dump it where it stops sort of thing.

I'm not great at parking cos I have poor depth perception (apparently) dispite having 20-20  but at least I'll try again if I don't get it straight the first second third time!

And now they even have reverse parking into a bay as part of the driving test.  never had that when I was a lad learning, just the parallel parking.

FUBAR

When I learnt to drive I asked my instructor if we could do some reverse parking and general Bay parking and I was told

"its not worth doing during the lesson to be honest, if you want to practice ask your mum to take you out"

but, back on topic, fair play to the old guy TBH as he's not had an accident for 3/4 of a century some people can't even go 3/4 of a week without hitting stuff so he's not done too badly, but if it was my IROC i'd be livid.

However, very recently my Grandma had to have eye tests to get her driving licence renewed because she has a degenerative eye condition in both eyes.  My personal opinion is that, even though she passed the tests and got her licence she is NOT fit to drive.  The condition she has basically means that the centre of her vision is either fuzzy beyond correction or blacked out (normally in the mornings when getting up)  now it varies day to day but she has said to my mum before that she will no longer be driving to MK (from southampton) and will get trains from now on, and will also no longer be driving in bad weather or night times.
I still do not feel this is enough, as she can't read road signs or number plates, sometimes sees "double exits" to roundabouts and can't read her car's instruments unless she looks through her periferal vision.
Now while I appreciate that my Grandma (and i'm sure other old people) cling on to driving as a last remaining freedom a line has to be drawn somewhere, and to put it bluntly, you'll never see my IROC in convoy with my Grandma's car (she's too slow for a start!) because she's a danger on the road, obviously not just to herself.

And my whole family has vowed never to go in a car with her again
