I am trying to find a new laptop and am not really sure what to go for, to start with it needs to be cheapish, but capable of running the internet as i use mine to go on the forums and facebook as well as chat to mates on msn.

i am not gonna get it for a few months but want to get ideas so i can save up for it!

I am a complete noob to things like this, i dont think i want another apple as i am not very good on the one i have i cant even work out how to copy and paste stuff so i need something that is tbh idiot proof!

So any suggestions

EDGE

the apple's not idiot proof enough ????

if you're not going for an apple (which would be my recommendation) try looking at the toshibas and sony's hey seem to be going strong, I wouldnt buy a packard bell or advent, but thats just me.....

dell are meant to be ok, and can be had fairly cheap

Fieldy

I had great experiance with Dell for 2 years, But since buying my MacBook, I won't go back to windows.......

i find the apple complicated!

As previosly said hun - dell are very good specification and price wise, other ones like advent, tosh, etc are all fine.....youy can take a chance with a cheaper / non main stream branded laptop as MOST of the parts you can service (HDD / RAM etc) are generic, but its the warratny on the main system board that you will not get as good cover with others.

TBh a nice cheap dell would odo you perfect, doesn't need to be top end spec for browsing / emailing etc.

Copy and paste works the same was as on a PC?

If you use keyboard shortcuts just hold down the Apple key instead of the Ctrl key and use the usual c,x and v keys.
Or go to the edit menu at the top of the screen and use cut, copy or paste.

Or right click (Ctrl - click if you don't have a 2 button mouse) and choose cut, copy or paste.

It's the same as a PC???

Sammy Lou

thats not the same as a pc

Yeah we use the IBm's at work for all out laptops and they are very durable .... but they do charge a premium though compared to other makes!!

Is there anything *other* than internet you want to use the laptop for?

Whatever laptop you get, try and stick to a mouse with at least two buttons. It makes things so much easier.

Mac vs PC is pretty much personal preference.
They'll both do pretty much everything (ok, Mac's won't be that hot at playing games, but that's probably not an issue for you).

PC wise, personally I'd avoid Toshiba as their driver support is crap. Having said that, it does work - just not the latest and greatest to allow my games to run properly. (spot a common theme here?).

I bought a Samsung R700 last month. Its great but unfortunatly you wont find one for 200.

Yeah it does...

Right click and choose "copy".

If you don't have a 2 button muse you'll need to hold down the Ctrl key while clicking to simulate a right-click.

Yup, your right there..

I have found for gaming, customising and a at more competitive price, a full computer is better.

For laptops and portablity / looks, Apple Macs are better...  So in this instance if you want a new lappy, I would stick with the mac powerbook.  Just get a normal USB PC mouse to plug in to use more like a PC.  They are like £3 quid from ebuyer..

I have an Acer laptop - 3 years old and never even needed anything reinstalling. Bought my OH one for her birthday last year for about £400 from Currys. Also seems very reliable and quick.

She had a Toshiba before that and it wasn't overly reliable - the power socket was really badly soldered and failed more than once.
