As it's looking like I'll be unable to make the Rolling Road day . . . would the loan of my Camaro's alternator be any good to you ?

Don't ask me the spec - just bear in mind it's got a Serp. pulley on it . . . . Not ideal, but better then nothing ???

Let us know, Mate.

Thanks for the offer, but mines a v-belt

Thats not to dificult to change, a single 3/4 nut is all that holds the pulley on the alternator guys

Jamieg285

Well as long as you don't mind me pulling it apart....

I will of course replace it if I bust it.

Shouldn't be a problem . . . . I'll need it back pretty quick afterwards, though.

Do you wanna pop round after you MoT on Monday ?

I Get back home at about 5.45pm and live about 2 miles from the MoT station.

Roadkill

Oh, Number 20, MK41HJ.

You wanna bet?

Alternator is a match, but the pulley and fan have to come off.

Problem is, I wedged the fan, and cranked the nut, but the shaft is turning with it.

There's a hex on the end, for which I have an allen key, but the only thing I currently have that fits the nut(which is recessed inside the pulley) is a socket, which means you can't get the key in at the same time.

I've left it in place tonght, will see if I can find a suitable offset ring spanner tomorrow morning.

Sorry mate, i forget not everyone has a tool fetish like me, i have hollow sockets back at my folks place if you get real stuck

Jamieg285

The annoying thing is, I do have a load of offset spanners, but none that fit. Most too small, and 1 too big

Jamieg285

hollow sockets

What are they? Never heard of them.

philoldsmobile

they hold a nut, while allowing access to the center of it..

i dunno exactly what ones greame has, but most have a hex on them for a spanner..

55starchief

like this mate only signet brand

Jamieg285

Also realy easy to strip out front dampers as you can get a hex socket through the middle

Oooh, I'd definitely like to borrow those then, when I get to replacing the front suspension later this year.

Had a similar problem myself, before . . . . I'm glad it's a match at least - Just hope you can get it on !

From memory it's a silly size - 13/16's or something . . .

Yep - 15/16 - just found that out.

24 socket will fit OK, but the 24 ring spanner won't.  Ringing round to try and find someone with one now.

Roadkill

Good luck.

I've emailed edge to apologise for my absence on Sunday . . .
