It'll never happen.  And if it did we'd ALL end up paying more.

That is the danger, although it is a much fairer way to tax than currently in place.

If you own a more poluting vehicle then it uses more fuel... If you use the roads alot, you use more fuel... If you own more than one vehicle, you can only use fuel in one at a time...

Everything that road tax is supposedly linked to is directly related to fuel useage...

You're probably right... It's far to sensible an idea for any government to back...

Probably but worth a try

May be you might on daily drivers, but for low useage vehicles we'd be quids in

Like your Z28 which is going to be £400 a year to tax...

Then again it willhit the classic car owners who currently have free tax, so as far as im concerned leave it as it is

What difference would it make to you? It's not like you have a classic that drives anywhere...

Besides, i'm pretty sure that classic owners don't do that many miles for it to have a great impact...

Nope, and it doesnt bother me in the slightest, infact i m thinking i might just leave it exactly how it is as it seem's to piss more people off than it does me

Nor me, I find it quite entertaining...

life's all about choices, at the moment my choice is to just own it and occasionally go and mess about with it.

Its the one thing i actually own outright.

its the fairest way, to tax by useage....
This forum needs, ''YOU'' posting,Not just reading ! :moon:

It's a good theory but 2 points:

1) The rate would be set such that the government gets the same or more than it does already from the population every year.  They're not going to lose the revenue.

2) Considering we pay such a high tax on the fuel anyway, they should just abolish road tax nad leave the fuel as is.  The loss of revenue would probably be levelled out by the saving made not having to enforce the thing.  But of course then they wouldn't get the extra income from fines...

3) If they want to keep some sort of licence/tax then it would make more sense to tax the driver than the cars.  That way those of us with more than one vehicle need pay only once (I have one ass, I can't drive both cars at once).  The same should apply to insurance, insure the driver, not the car.

philoldsmobile

defintley tax on fuel, not the car, with the 12 or so liters i use a week, i'd pay VERY little tax - the Alfa really doesn't see a lot of use.

Wouldn't be though - if F Body's is a 99, like mine its not covered in the new legislation (2001 cars onwards).

Mind you, I don't suppose it will stop them putting the price up for pre 01 cars at some point...

Fieldy

noooooo, I only pay £30 A year right now, I'd lose out too much

But seriously, it is more fair if it's on the fuel, I wouldn't complain....

Rob

Surely it would also save them a lot of money through administation.  They just get the private companies like BP and Shell etc to collect the tax for them, thus freeing up PC Plod and Mr Patel the post office clerk to do other duties more associated with their profession.

Would sign it if they didn't want so many details about you....

They already know all those details anyway and when ever you drive past an ANPR camera anywhere in the country
