what a difference 12 months make

Official start date (ie. first "erection") was 23rd August 2008 . . . . . I'm hoping to have a little celebration come the 23rd of August 2009 (sunday).

I've still got 5 weeks or so to make an impact.

Roadkill

The units are generally assembled and ready for fitting . . . the heavy-duty frames on which they'll sit are also finished, too.

I've also now taken delivery of the new sink and taps (and have assembled the sink !!) . . . The rear door main frame is now modified and the original brick wall side is partly plasterboarded.

I've also added some frame work to the short wall the door is mounted to to enable to flush-mount the new light switch and socket and to hide the cold pipe for the front outside tap.

Pics to follow.

Bit of a failure this evening due to drill bits failing on me - oh, well - still got a reasonable amount done - will hit it again tomorrow !

Some pics . . . .

Here's the frame under the main two cupboards to be fitted under the workbench . . . Yes the frames are heavy-duty but the cupboards will be fairly well-loaded . . .

Also note the fresh, vertical timber to the left - this is the modifications I required to fit the door I wanted and to extend the depth of the bench slightly.

Here's a pic showing the very tight arrangement of plasterboard-bearing batons, insulated cold water pipe (grey), lighting and mains cables and light switch and socket !

It'll be pimpin' and tidy when I've finished with it, though.

A shot from tonight . . . . Sink and waste assembled and loosely sat on the frame to assess location . . . cupboard carcasses sat roughly in position and, note, flexible grey waste pipe disappearing through the bottom of the cupboard on the left and going through the 38mm deck, 50mm of polystyrene and through the soil pipe inspection drain cover.

FYI - Ian.

4 off Bosch 3mm masonry drill bits purchased at £3.08 EACH !

They look far superior to the others I was using so I'm hoping they'll survive.

lets hope so - might mean we can get all those boards up tonight

Major, major progress over the weekend.

Description won't do it justice so will be posting some pictures later.

Thanks to Ian, as usual, for assistance.

Some pictures -

Under the sink.

Everything (almost) has it's place.

Pimpin' ! . . . . Although I've now decided to up the cupboard capacity, slightly and add another base unit . . . .

*Note - protective covers are still on the doors.

Are you going to plaster the plaster board

Of course.  And artex the ceiling . . . and add coving (no, I'm not kidding).

Unfortunately I needed it, quite literally, there and then.

The plus side is that I only used 1 out of 4 so I'm going to take the others back !!!

Work is progressing nicely . . .  I'm now aware that I'm approaching the one-year anniversary of this project so am anxious to get as much done before then !

Here's a picture of the outside (rear door) looking in - the new door is now test-hung (out of shot).

And here's a shot of the new (and final) cupboard carcass . . . this'll give me enough space to completely clear out the '58 and find homes for everything (apart from the stuff in my roll-cab, of course)

There's been more work done since these pictures were taken but you'll have to wait . . . .

Are you going to plaster the plaster boards or paint straight over?

The gap will fit an office chair.

The unit to the right of the gap (the one with louvred vents in) will house my P.C and the screen will be fitted on the bench . . . .

The area by the window is not only a storage space - it'll be a kind-of office area too . . . . I plan to put (heavy-duty of course) carpet tiles down, there.

The walls will be skimmed flat and the ceiling flatted then artexed . . . . . It's one of the next jobs and one I'm really not looking forward to . . . .

@RK - yah i bet.. Just seen FB asked the same question.. My phone screen is too small haaa

Finally got the door / latch final fixed on saturday so the garage can now be secured 100% . . . . . . . except the fact that I've got to take the door back off in order to stain it !!!

I hate "glossing" . . . .

I'll be starting the job PVA'ing the walls / ceiling tonight, most likely . . in readiness for the mass filling / smoothing job.

Big Mouse

oh dear, only two hinges on an exterior door, it will warp, put three hinges on it, you know it makes sense.

Great job by the way, very neat. If you want a large carpet protector for the office chair give me a shout, its not new but it will protect the new carpet tiles.

It did cross my mind . . . the hinges on it are roller-bearing, polished stainless at £14 a pair !!!

My reasoning for going with two was that it's shorter than a standard door (it's 74") so the span between hinges is less . . . .

However, now you mention it . . . .

The door's off again, now, for staining so I could add another . . . .

I would, the size difference between that and a standard door isn't enough to take the chance IMO

Well . . . the next major job was sanding down all the joints in the plasterboard . . .

The jointing compound container said "sand with fine sand paper to a smooth finish"

Based on this info I guessed it'd take an evening, maybe two to do.

Along comes thursday evening.  I begin.  Three hours later and using P60 grit (hardly f*cking fine is it !!??) and my sanding catches fire !!!

Hardcore.

I sand some filled-in screw heads for another hour then give up.  I'm beat.

Friday I collect a new sander and PhilO brings home some industrial grade P40 grit.

Even more hardcore !

Saturday morning, after the gym, I begin again.  Progress is slow - very slow - and the dust is hell.

Sunday morning, after the gym, I begin (yet) again.  Progress is (again) slow - very slow - and the dust is hell (again).

By end-of-play sunday the walls are done just leaving the "softer" artex-style filler on the ceiling.  It'll be a nice easy one monday, then.

Yeah, 'course it was.

This artex stuff is basically ready mixed granite.  Not even the P40 touches it !!!

By this point I'm honestly knackered and utterly at the point of surrender . . . so I take one final go using P24 pads on my 115mm ANGLE GRINDER !!!

The dust is now flying f*cking everywhere but it's still resisting it !!!

Another 5 hours later - a total of 22 hours spread over three days - or 26 if you include the thursday and I'm kind of finished.

I took yesterday off and then starting PVA'ing the ceiling (ready for artex pattern) and walls (ready for patch filling and paint) this evening.

The garage is, again, reasonably dust-free and tidy once more . . . . . the pictures below were taken on monday afternoon before the clean-up began.
