Roadkill

I'll take pictures on saturday - ie. in daylight . . . the flash just makes the colours look funny(ier).

Roadkill

Decided not to take any pictures over the weekend but instead wait until it's 100% complete inside.

Now only have one-and-a-half jobs left to do; the half is a weekend-only job and the other is putting up the rest of the signs (that are currently sitting in customs )

Incursus

Roadkill

Still waiting on the tin signs . . . . . It's amazing - they go thousands of miles in just 2 days but have taken nearly a week to do the last 50 !!!

Also think I'm modifying how I'm doing the last job on the list so that'll take a bit longer, now.
It'll be much better for it, though.

Also (finally) ordered the mains connector thingy so I can have permanent, fast internet out in the garage as wireless just wasn't holding up out there . . . It should also make it simplier for the LANs, too, as we won't have to run a cable under the gravel to the lounge window !!

Roadkill

Been toying with the idea of adding central heating to the garage (it's the only thing it lacks except a toilet !!!)

My calculations state that it'll require approximately 15000 BTUs.

A 1400 x 600 single convector (like below) puts out 4950 BTUs so I'd need three (producing 14850).

Approximate cost including valves and fixings : £215.

I really need the garage to maintain a temperature of around 12*C to prevent condensation/damp so that should do it . . . . I'm also considering ways of insulating the roller-shutter door on the front.

This was originally going to be a "some point" job . . . but as I need to drill holes into the house to run pipes (and I'll be decorating within the next few weeks) it makes sense to do it fairly soon.

On a sidenote :

Tackled the other half of the half-job on the "to do" list on saturday morning - will inspect later before crossing off of the list.

The final job will be the rest of the tin signs that I'll start this evening.

Have also upgraded the internet connection out in the garage from a p!ss-poor wireless to a mains-type adapter connection so am now getting a decent speed !
This'll also make internet connection alot easier for future LANs, too.

Hmm won't the rad's reduce the overal width though, or are they being strategically positioned....

Have you though of something that could be mounted along the coving (i.e. between the lights) - means no loss of wall space.....?

Towel radiators would be cool - useful to dry and hang stuff too

You could have also run another wireless router out there and set it up as a signal repeater linking back to the main one in the house. Advantages would be for LAN partys - no messing about with wires and HUBs and you would get a good speed - probably as good as IN the house.

The problem is the wireless signal is not good at all on the garage - even with a high gain antenna on, hence going for the mains stuff (the other option was to run a proper LAN cable there!) - its pretty good - 50-60mbps between the 2 mains connectors (one in garage one in house) so its more than adequate for net surfing!

Also they connect to the PC / router with a standard Network RJ45 lead - so when LAN party, we just unplug deans PC - plug in a hub and away we go

Hmm i was thinking more like the single bar / element heater things ... cant seem to find a linky at the mo though...

I thought that was the idea behind making a router a repeater that even if the signal was poor, it would pick-up that signal and boost it again

Or maby just put a router in the room closest to the garage (which I presume is the kitchen) and use that as a repeater - that way the signal isn't having to travel all the way through the garage wall before being repeated with full boost?

I bet you wish you'd put underfloor heating in now...

Well yes & no - its still got to get a decent signal to start with before it repeats it on.... so yeah you'd have to stick it somewhere in teh middle..but seeing as he already got the mains things = problem sorted

ditto, and also that your pump is man enough to cope with the extra flow.

I'd go with electric heaters; they'll cost more but less stress on your exisiting heating system and easier to control for a set temperature

By about 50mm.

That wouldn't produce a decent heat flow.  Heat rises so to produce a flow they have to be near the floor.  Radiation-based heaters can be mounted high but household rads are convection types.

I will.

That said it was overkill when they installed it so it should be fine.

Their BTU output is bloody awful, though !

They run on electric so are more expensive and aren't quite as safe . . . they're more for supervised use.

Nah.

That's harder to control (delay) and wouldn't have suited the construction of the floor.

The theory is to mount all the rads low-down, evenly along one wall . . . there's minimal draft in there so it should create a nice heat flow.

I will

I just found a similar boiler to mine (may even be the same) - that's got an output of 102,000 BTU.

Based on the current radiator arrangement I'd say that they're currently using about 28,000 at most.  There's two small/med singles and a med double downstairs plus five small/med singles upstairs.

I'll check my boilers specs to be sure.

Roadkill

My boiler appears to be a (Worcester Greenstar) Junior 24i OR 28i (Combi).

Either one has a max output of around 24KW (at full temp).

24KW = 81885 BTU I believe.

At most I currently use 28,000 BTU and require another 15,000 BTU - total of 43,000 BTU.

Which is obviously just over half of what the boiler can do.

Assuming I've got all my figures correct this seems like the simplest and cheapest method both long and short-term.

Ta-da !

I finally, offically, finished the garage "fit-out" during the week.

All the jobs on the list are done.

I didn't take pictures straight away as she needed a bit of TLC . . . so I've now hoovered the carpet tiles and thoroughly wiped over the floor.

She's as good as she'll get.   That said there's some minor jobs that still need doing outside that'll take about a weekend to complete but they're outside and I need warmer weather to do them !

And then there's potentially the central heating bit but that's not a definate at the moment . . . . . .

So that's it.

She's done.

Enjoy !
