Why doesn't she get a job and buy her own car ?

I finally saved enough money to pass my test when I was 20 (just before my 21 birthday) - I didn't get it paid for me . . . . and then my first car was a £50 battered Astra which I brought myself.

It kinda irritates me with kids "nowadays" expecting to have all that paid for them . . . . mobile phones, games consoles, driving lessons . . . why should they expect the parent to fork out for them - I managed O.K paying for all that stuff myself !

Then they'll get another 5 years older and start complaining they can't afford a house and that mummy and daddy should help out there, too.

I get where you are coming from and i think getting kids to stand on their own two feet is a good quality to instill in children. However if you have teenager you do get very fed up with them always needing to be picked up or dropped off from somewhere and if you can afford to help them start driving it will make your own life a lot easier.

When i was 17 i would walk or cycle everywhere but i honestly wouldnt want my daughter walking home on her own these days late at night. I live in a village away from town and i cant wait till i stop having to go out at 11pm to collect my kids.

including a 3.0S with a full on 3100 motor

oh sweet memories, I had one of those with a stage 3 engine prep. Nearly killed me when I tried (and epically failed) taking the A5 roundabout at the city centre at 80mph Wrote it off on that one and broke a collarbone

Had to have two paving slabs welded into a cage in the boot to keep its arse on the road - loads of fun though

I don't agree with parents coughing up for cars or houses for their kids.  I don't think it encourages decent values.

But that's just my opinion of course, people can do whatever they want!

A good solution all round would be to loan the money for the car and encourage a part time job, perhaps in retail.  Then they can pay the car back.  Obviously they'll moan about giving up their hard earned but that's life, the car must be paid for.

when i was 18 i WISHED my parents would have bought me a car... but they didnt.. and I tell ya... having to work like a dawg for that car made me appreciate it that much more.....

of course, if someone can buy their child a car thats all well and good, each to their own, but i would NOT be aiming at a capri...

get her in to a job and earn herself a focus or something, £2k, top of the rage safety (well, MUCH better than a capri) fwd, easy to fix, nice newish car...  Wont take more than 6 months working in a part time job to save up £2k....

And ?

I was working temp / part time from the age of 15 while still at school, then stayed on at sixth form and did college while still working.

(I got good grades, too).

I only passed up university as I acquired my own place at 18 while taking a gap year to save for uni . . . .

I worked for a few years after my a-levels to get some money together then went to uni, and worked 3 days a week thoughout my 3 year degree (not including weekend jobs too)...

[blow own trumpet]
Came out with a 1st and at the top of my year... all while working AND studying AND travleing an hour each way to uni.  Yes I pulled a 4 day straight with no sleep to get stuff done but that's how it is...

Well she does have a paper round, but it's quite difficult for 16/17 year olds to get part time employment because of all the rules & regulations.
Police checks for anyone who works with them and young persons risk asessments etc etc.............

Another thing that will be unfairly blamed on H&S professionals like myself
When in fact it's government departments and local councils etc

I used to wash / polish cars at the weekends (YES, honestly !) when I was 10-14 and when I was 15-16 used to deliver leaflets at 20-30p (IIRC) per 100 - starting, normally, at 4am !!! - I'd also normally do an hour or two before school.

Or course, Father had me in the mines when I was 4 but that was O.K as I got milk at tea time . . .

i bought this little Seat Arosa (VW Lupo) 1.0 S on Ebay a couple of days ago for £630!
1 whole litre, power steering, power windows, tilt wheel but the clicher was 60mpg!

It's basically a family runaround and to help my daughter to learn to drive as driving lessons are £26 per hour.
