no word of a lie, you can get a serviceable 600 cheaper than a 125

True.

I paid £690 (IIRC) for my 125cc yet £420 for my 600cc.

My first bike was a Chinese one - no problems at all, very robust and comfortable - I would highly recommend one for a newbie.

why go as big as a mondeo? or even for that fact an escort..

I'd be looking at Ka or Fester if you want to go ford.. what about gaewoo matiz? pissan micra? etc..

if its just a commuting tool, the lower the running cost, the more you have to chuck in the pot towards a decent yank...

problem with the smaller car is that they're often not as safe.

when you're free and single a ka/motorbike is ok (well, ish) but when youve got a wife and kids at home to look after you dont want to be the guy that died in a matiz leaving his family to look after themselves, just to save a couple of hundred quid.....

If I were you dude, I'd save up for a little while, I mean PROPER save up until youve got another £500 or so in the kitty and buy something like a focus, far safer, good on fuel, CHEAP to insure, aircon etc..... all the stuf you'd need...

That's my tuppence worth.....

If the wife and I ever have a child, I'm buying her the biggest, safest car I can possibly get my hands on....

Fieldy

I'm with you Edge. so I took everyones advice, and bought this today.

2000, x Reg. MOT & Tax, 81,000 Ford Mondeo Zetec-S. Everything works as it should. A little sporty and fun (definatly compared to my pick-up!), smooth and comfortable.

£800.

Looks tidy enough, although my polishing  eye did spot some corrosion on the off side front alloy

all 4 are suffering a little, but not a lot....

Andy

NICE! Very nice! RSAP bodykit too, 1.8 or 2 litre? just seen the badging.

Welcome to the Mondeo club! Get yourself registered on fordmondeo.org if you have any problems.

Being an X reg, last of the line and that you should have all the optional extras which is such a bonus.

First mod, buy yourself a B&M Short shifter kit, nothing beats it in my opinion, also saves smacking the radio buttons with careless changes...

No idea? It has heated front windscreen, CD player, remote central locking

I like it, so I will sign up now

Andy

Yep, heated front screen, electric heated mirrors, heated washer jets, 4x electric windows, air con.

The RSAP bodykit i didn't think was standard so you may have got yourself a tidy little bonus with that. Thought it only came as an option on Ghia X's, ST24's and ST200's.

Seriously though, for that money, nice buy! If its nice and straight with no rusting rear arches you've got yourself a bargin. Shall do 100k plus on that milage for not a lot more.

They should demist/de-ice for 5 minutes when the rear heated screen button has been pressed.

Have a peek under the sound deadening on the bonnet on the passenger side. Should be a couple of wire running to the jets. These again, defrost the pipe ends once the rear heated screen button has been pressed.

Ah fair, same as mine. Maybe that was a Ghia X, st24, st200 thing.

Does the air con work? Be wary of it not seeming to work and just getting it re-gassed. Common (well on mine due to me doing a Dukes of Hazard style jump) for the bottom of the condensor radiator to corrode and rot causing a leak of R12. This will only become apparent after doing a regas. As in my case the vacum test held the pressure.

Roadkill

What's the insurance like on that ?

Andy

Shouldn't be too bad, I think the 1.8/2 petrols are only group 9 insurance. Don't know if the Zetec-s adds anything to it. Shouldn't do in terms of performance as they're all the same engines.

EDGE

Nice one Fieldy, great choice of car. Just don't come anywhere near the a406 near my place with it. It's only likely to break something like normal !!!

Looks very nice too, any more pics yet?

£200 left of the budget, so hopefully not any more than that.
Would be interested to know though.

Fieldy

So far we have got it to £600, that is with my wife as the main driver and me as a name driver (she only has 1 years no claim).

Ah but that's because you're less likely to be involved in an accident when sitting in the motorteway services waiting for a tow truck...

That's less than my Z28 costs to insure

HardRockCamaro

Really?

The IROC is costing me £187 on a 3,000 mile policy, and the Caddy was £330 iirc (£3xx anyway) on a 7,000 mile policy...

London postcode, clean licence...
