Just reading about CVTs and ICVTs.. Now the automatic gear box is genius, but CVTs look like a whole new toy.

these aren't a new idea dude.... :)

the cars do sound ODD though, they rev up to say 5k and then just stay there while the car changes road speed... its REALLY odd to listen too.....

Naw, I just haven't see a car with it installed or really read about it..

That does sound weird. I think the rev of the engine is kind of one of the attractive things about vehicles as a car enthusiast...

Yeah, that sounds weird, boring and slightly un-natural too

Makes interesting reading - have heard of em before but good article....good a sneaky feeling that there was one episode of scrapheap challenge where they use a car (think it might have been a trabant or summat?) that had a CVT in it!!!

Not at all nice to drive

I think it was an old DAF ( taken over by Volvo in it's latter years ) and they used a belt which jumped along a series of pulleys ( like a small Pillar Drill drive motor )

EDIT : GM seem to have removed the YouTube block at work because I can see & watch the video

ianjpage

google is our friend - it was a DAF indeed - but it was called "variomatic":

See now I get the rubber band jokes!

A very simple and cheap system because the belt changed pulleys by itself by running up a chamfer at a certain rpm onto the next pulley

But the rubber belts stretched & broke making the system very unreliable

HardRockCamaro

A lot of the hybrid cars, like the honda Insight, use CVT.

They are more efficient than traditional auto's, but it's just a constant droning at any particular rpm

I suppose that if you could eliminate engine noise it wouldn't be a problem, I would have thought that pure electric cars like the Telsa would have been perfect for a CVT
